Last night was great for area 62.

Gary Mull delivered a terrific presentation for 70 guests at the Holiday inn Guelph.

The night was supported by Stone Road Toastmasters and Royal City Toastmasters clubs as well as a big helping hand from Blake Kurisko of Miller Thomson LLP.

given the success of the evening and the good time that Gary had, it would not surprise me if there was another similar event in the not to distant future.

I long to accomplish a great and noble tasks, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker.

There are countless saying about setting and achieving goals all designed to make us think.

However, many if not most of us do not know how to set goals that will help us identify the thing it is that we want most or goals that are achievable.

Some things we can do right away and others must be done in stages.

Here are a few things to consider when setting your short and long term goals: (Taken from a posting on Article base dated Aug 22, 2008)

Long term goals are where it all begins. If you find that you are trying to set short term goals only, then you will not go far. Jesus for example was a very long term goal setter. His inspiration and divine message came to us with a long term view.

For most people, they look day to day, week to week. Making your goals stem from the long term, will mean you are a ship going forward, rather than trying to tackle a storm.

(Mid Range Goals)
1 Year
6 Month

Mid range goals are excellent. They are more tangible. Though they can seem like a while away, they still feel closer than thinking about a decade or a lifetime. Here is where adjustments are made, that take you towards your long term goals.

(Small Range Goals)
- 3 month goals
- 1 month goals
- Fortnightly goals

Small range goals are round the corner! They are goals which are easily set, and workable. Though they won't be large commitments, the incremental successes with these goals will take you forward to your long term vision.

(Personal Time)
- Weekly Goals

Most people stick here. It is the weekly pay check. It is what people are doing over the weekend, etc. These goals fall into what I call personal time. They can be great to measure, and see your progress.

(Personal Time - Micro Time)
- Daily Goals
- Hourly Goals
- Sub Hour and Minute Goals (every 30 or 15 minutes, and even a minute)

This area of goal setting is micro time, and personal time. Here is where action falls. And here is where it will make or break your future. If you want to breakthrough to success, you will need to take actions that lead you to your long term vision.

If you're wondering how you take this information, and how to set short and long term goals, you will need to think about the long term. The long term is the domain of the goal setter and goal achiever. When you can break down goals effectively into bite size pieces then you can succeed.

Success in the long term is born from success in the short term. Most people don't succeed because they focus on the short term, and forget the long term. Like ships at harbor, they bop up and down, but never move forward to distant lands.

Your vision is round the corner, but to get there, you will need to take action. But, first, you will need to know where you want to go. Don't do what many do, and wait because they don't know what they want. You need to focus on what you want.

Hi all,

2010 is almost upon us and for the last 6 months I have been doing all the posting. I am throwing it out to you to share your experiences outside the club or inside the club.

When I joined Toastmasters nearly six years ago I would not have imagined being the area governor. In fact I accepted the position with some hesitation.
From the beginning I faced some interpersonal challenges and discovered how to temper feelings and empower others. I have so far had many frustrating moments but the bright light continues to be the fact that I have stretched my abilities further than ever before and I am willing to take on greater challenges.

Over the next six months I will share some of my area governor and Toastmaster experiences, good and bad. With the hope that you will do the same.

I will also continue to update you on the goings on of Area 62 in District 86, Region 6

International speech contest start at the club

The date for the Division W contest is set for March 26, 2010 at a location to be specified.

As for any contest or special event an organizing committee is required to bring it all together, please put the question to your club members for anyone who may be interested in chairing the committee or participating in the event.

Royal City Toastmasters has offered to host the area contest. I would suggest March 5th (Friday) as this will leave sufficient time before the Division contest and not interfere with March break. Again many roles will need to be filled and Royal City TM would certainly appreciate the assistance from other clubs. (Note to Barry: This is an opportunity for one of your members to complete their HPL project)

(most will leave the Friday before March 12)

Tentative club contest dates available the entire month of February except Sun Feb 14 and Mon Feb 15

As a lead up to the contests and possible as part of the officer training session in January workshops could be held for Judging, How to organize a contest, evaluating, how to construct a speech.

These are all great opportunities for some more experienced area 62 Toastmasters to share their knowledge and expertise why their fellow members and go outside the club.

Phase 2 officer training

Calling all Toastmasters, phase 2 officer training will begin in January.

Our last chance session was a great success and I would again like to thank Stone Road Toastmasters for their assistance in organizing the night.

This time we would like to have a have day training for all club officers and potential executive for the up coming Toastmasters year.

Phase 2 training is not a recap of the information provided in phase 1 but a chance to expand on the leadership experience, share ideas with other club executive members and introduce the idea of leadership within the club to members who may want to become leaders within your club. (legacy planing)

What we can learn in these sessions will not only serve us in our Toastmasters experience , it will help us grow in our professional and personal lives as well.

I can tell you from personal experience, the skills I have acquired through Toastmasters, have given me the courage and the ability to take on leadership roles at my place of work and in my community.

Let's make area 62 a place where people are enriched and recognized for stepping up and stepping out.

Club Membership Drive IDEAS:

1. Plan a membership Drive for 1 to 2 months = build your membership and help others in your community.

2. Earn CL Credit for Planning a Club Event.

3. Have Theme Meetings – make them a fun and a good learning experience for guests.

4. Donate pocket change at each meeting – award Free 6 months Membership dues to a deserving member.

5. Plan a Membership Drive Celebration – another member earns a CL Credit.

6. Award Members for bringing most Guest and/or most New Members (ask local business for gift certificate donations – they will say “YES” or “NO”, it can’t hurt.

7. Have a Speech-a-Thon during one of your meetings – silent evaluations if you run out of time.

8. Invite a speaker from another club to be your guest speaker, invite your Area Gov, Div Gov or one of the Trio to present a motivational speech at your meeting.

13. Plan a Celebration with all the Clubs in Your Area… talk to your Area Gov… If every Club in your Area has at least a net of 8 new members.. talk to your Lt Gov of Marketing, she might provide funds for a Pizza Party.

14. Decide how the FREE Registration will be awarded to one of your members, when your Club WINS!

many clubs hold Christmas socials and my home club Cambridge Toastmasters in Area 64 is no exception.

Going way outside the club

I know that some of you have been up in Collingwood the last couple of days for the District 86 fall conference.

There is no doubt in my mind that you will be changed by this experience.

Going outside of your club is a chance to see and meet other toastmasters and benefit from the commeradery and experiences they bring to the table. Plus the socializing.

The spring conference changed me and since then I have traveled many places and attended a Toastmasters meeting in each city I have been to.

Last week I was in Niagara Falls NY for the District 65 conference and although they do things a little differently I have gained terrific insights and will bring new ideas to my club and others that I visit along the way.

This has also increased my willingness to stretch and do new things, such as workshop presenter at the many training sessions that TM offers.

Hopefully when you have returned home your mind will be filled with the possibilities. I and others would be truly interested in your experience and just how it will inspire you to go beyond what you are currently doing.

I look forward to hearing and reading your stories.

regrettably I have not been able to visit many of your clubs this month.

I would however as that you complete and return the club visit report form, e-mailed to each of you earlier today,no later than Friday of this week. The purpose of the form is to provide Toastmasters international an impression of the status of your club and offer assistance when and wherever it may be needed. Or just stand back and watch our clubs be the success stories that they are.

If I have not visited your club it will be so indicated to Toastmasters.

I encourage you all to contact me directly to discuss any concerns or questions and also encourage you to speak with your respective VP's of Education when completing this form.

The best time to prepare for the next contest is immediately after the last contest. Although the Evaluation speech contest and International speech contest are many months away there is no better time to start thinking about putting that date on your calendar.

To that end Barry Newcombe, President of Royal City Toastmasters has already stepped up and offered to host the spring area contest. Way to go Barry!

To help us all plan I have listed some important dates below and suggested dates for the area and division contests. Of course neither can happen without your club contests.

Please have a look and let me know when your club contests will be in the months of January or February. With this information in hand we can start to plan a great contest with all the necessary people in place.

WOW the last two weeks have been more than busy!

the clubs have held the contests and we came together at the co-operators club for our area 62 contest where members from the co-operators, Stone Road, Town & Gown and Royal city clubs.

Although all the contestants performed well and showed us how to laugh and be creative it was ultimately Hakeem Shittu who won Humour and Danve Castroverde who won Table Topics. Both from Town & Gown Toastmasters.

On to Last night at th University of Waterloo where Hakeem and Danve were strong representative for Guelph & Area 62.

With approximately 140 guests and members in attendance. Including Waterloo regional chair Ken Seiling and filmed by CTV (Kitchener) all the contestants stepped up their game.

The laughs were long and loud, in fact I am sure we could be heard all around Division W.

Danve was very creative and structured with his table topic speaking about how he grew from a seemingly under achieving elementary student to the top of class Masters student he is today. He was however edged out By Allan Krause from area 64 Top Drawer Toastmasters and his story of aeronautical engineering.

Hakeem also was on his game delivered a very funny speech on the subtleties of the English language. Although, rough, ploughed, was beaten by Matt Pavlik's cough.

Hakeem's top 3 finish is some to be proud of in a group of such funny people.

Matt is from Grand River Toastmasters in Area 64.

Both Matt and Allan will represent our Division W at the District 86 conference in Collingwood from Nov 13 - 15.

I would encourage you all to attend if not the entire conference then certainly the contests and show the comeradery that exists in Division W and area 62.

Congratulations to our Area 62 competitors Hakeem Shittu and Danve Castroverde for their excellent representation and To Allan Krause and Matt Pavilk for their being chosen to move on to the District 86 contest.

Dues are past due

Welcome to October!

I wish to send a quick note to ensure that all clubs are current with their membership dues, to deadline was Sept 30th at midnight Pacific time. It is important to remain current for several reasons.

Members will be in good standing and receive the benefits associated with their membership such as their magazine subscription, recognition of their educational and leadership achievements and other support from Toastmasters International.
Clubs will be in good standing and receive a DCP point for submitting dues on time.
Clubs in need of support from Toastmasters International will be eligible to receive it. (IE club Coach, Club Mentor)

Because we are in full contest mode contestant eligibility may also be affected. For an individual to compete they must be a member in good standing of a club in good standing.

Should any club or member have experienced difficulty with the submission of dues to Toastmasters International please advise me without delay so we may address the situation in a positive manner.

Club humorous speech contests are underway and in less than two weeks we will be having the area 62 speech contest.

I have already attended a half dozen contests around the division and I can tell you that area 62 will far well at the division contest on Oct 23rd.

Now is the time to register and get your ticket for this Humorous event. The tickets are only $10 for one of the funniest evenings you will ever have. Not to mention the chance to support the top speakers from area 62. You will also have a chance to network with political and business leaders from around the region.

The Last chance club officer training was a success!

A huge thank you the the following:

Stone Road Toastmasters for providing the facility for the training

All of our facilitators, Terri Miller, Melanee Jessup, Assad Kamal, Margaret Virani, Lin Buxton, Nancy Movrin, Michelle Munroe, & Carol Moeller.

Without you and many other this could not have happened.

We had 18 people show up for this training (although I suspect a few did not let me know who they were)

and Stone Road Toastmasters actually received one guest who will return for a regular meeting.

Trained at this meeting was Ian Horne area 3 governors and treasurer for the Northern Advanced club in Sudbury and 3 more of the club executive from Agvantage Toastmasters in Guelph. This brings the total number of their executive trained to 5. was to be on track for distinguished club.

Club officers need to be trained to help a club have the best chance at success and effectively support it's members. The drop dead date for phase 1 club officer training is Monday Aug 31. If you have not been able to attend this is it!

We have brought the training to Guelph and combined it with a judging workshop open for all Toastmasters to attend.

Installing the new executive

Yesterday I had the privilege of installing the 2009 - 2010 club officers for the Agvantage Toastmasters club.

There are several reasons for doing this:

It provides an opportunity for the outgoing club executive committee to be acknowledged for their contribution to the good health of the club as they are formally discharged from their responsibilities.

The incoming committee is introduced and also acknowledged for their willingness to commit their time and energy so as to help the entire membership achieve their personal and group goals.

Further we are reminded that this is a volunteer organization committed to the improvement of communication and leadership skills.

Personally I am very happy to perform this act as I seem many energized and amazing people willing to step up and help their fellow learners get to where they want to be.

Yesterday was no exception to this as I installed Rachel Jones as President and VP of Education, Shiona Glass as VP Membership, Becky Jamieson as Treasurer and John Kleingebbinck, Lisa Ivaldi as VP Public Relations (absent) and Yufi Jin as Secretary (absent).

Than you all for your commitment to your personal growth and that of your fellow club members. I know it will be a great year!

Our Fall speech contests are coming and your chance to participate is now.

A Toastmasters contest is a time for people to grow, step outside their comfort zone, learn something new, be part of a team and have a great time no matter what role they are in.

What role can you play in a speech contest?

The most obvious is contestant but not all of us have that competitive element to our personality.
I can tell you from experience that speaking in front of a large group is very energizing and raises the quality of every speech.

Other things you could do are:

Contest chair person
Chief Judge
Judge
Promotions
Master of Ceremonies
Sergeant at arms
sponsorship
volunteer

Of course no contest would be complete without audience members.

A Toastmasters contest is an opportunity for us to show those outside of Toastmasters, our friends, family and colleagues what we have accomplished. You will be pleased to find that most audiences outside of Toastmasters also want us to succeed. Especially if you are connected to them.

Once they have seen what we can do. They will also want to be a part of something special. Beginning their own path to personal growth.

Growing outside the club

Yesterday I came across a news paper article written by a Toastmaster I know. Tony is a Toastmaster of less than one year and has been on a mission of self improvement for some time.

When he joined Toastmasters, he was reserved and lacked some confidence. His club quickly discovered that what he lacked in confidence he made up for in determination. If he could, Tony, would give a speech every week.

Tony is a natural story teller and offers up very descriptive prose when he speaks. His structure did need work, but over, all his stories were quite entertaining.

All this to say that in the last almost year Tony has grown more confident and still delivers a colourful speech which are now combined with body language and structure as well as all the things we learn from our cc manual projects.

Tony has clearly grown inside the club. So much so that he gained the confidence to try something NEW. Tony took his speaking style and applied pen to paper, submitting a guest column to his local news paper. To great pleasure it was published on July 21, 2009. Although the paper edited the column for length, Tony has become a great deal more confident and it is inspiring him to try more new things inside the club where it is safe and outside where the perceived risk is greater but so are the rewards.

At the same time as Tony was stretching his personal wings, he was also promoting Toastmasters and a special Toastmasters event. This can and does help clubs grow as well by encouraging new people to attend meetings as guests.

Voting is part of your role

The Board of Directors of Toastmasters International, at its February, 2009, meeting, unanimously recommended approval of the Bylaw amendments.
Amendments to the Bylaws of Toastmasters International will be presented to the voting membership at the 2009 Annual Business Meeting.

Each club president should have received a proxy form from Toastmasters international. This proxy form is for those of you who do not intend to participate (in person) in the business meeting portion of the international conference in Mashantucket, CT Aug 12th - 15th, 2009.

Please complete the form indicating your intended vote.

Club Officer Training

The District will hold one last club officer training on
Aug 22/09.

Location: St. John's Kilmarnock School, 2201 RR-30 Joseph St., Breslau, ON, N0B 1A0

Date & Time: Saturday Aug 22, 2009 8:30am to approximately noon

registration starting at 8:30 AM. The officer training will be held in the
morning with additional workshops in the afternoon. More details will
follow.

This is a 20 - 25 minute drive from Guelph. Please let me know if you have officers that need to be trained and if they will be attending. We can perhaps arrange some carpooling.

Going outside the club rewards program

One of the most interesting ways to grow is to experience what other Toastmasters clubs and events have to offer.

Every year District 86 encourages individuals to " GO OUTSIDE THEIR CLUB " with a rewards program.

All you have to do is ask your club President or e-mail me (billkirby2007@hotmail.com) for the form and take it with you when you visit another club, contest, training or special event and have it initialed by the club President or other executive, then have your club President submit the signed papers to Merri McCartney, 116 Jeater Street, Kincardine, ON, N2Z 2X3 by June 30, 2010.

Please share this with all your members, it is a great way to learn from other clubs and extend the benefits of membership in this very friendly International organization. Who knows you may event get material for a new speech.

Area club visits

Congratulations to all of you. District 86 is officially a Distinguished District with Toastmasters International! What does that mean?

It means:

- that members, just like you have achieved their goals;

- that Clubs, just like your club have achieved their goals;

- that new members have joined because they see the value in the Toastmasters program;

- that new clubs have been started to provide the Toastmasters program to more people;

- that members have been achieving their Competent Communicator award;

- that members have been achieving their Advanced Communicator award;

- that members have followed the Leadership track and earned their Leadership awards;

Summertime club officer training

Good morning fellow Toastmasters,

I have been asked by several club officers when the next training will be. Currently there is no scheduled training date. The last training session took place in Mississauga on June 19th.

I am working on scheduling club officer training in the Guelph area, I will keep you posted on the details.

It is important that all your club officers receive their training as it increases their ability to effectively manage their respective club, grow as leaders and earn DCP point which are used as indicators of a clubs health. DCP points (Distinguished Club Plan points) are the measure used by Toastmasters International to gauge the health of individual clubs. Details are feedback to Area Governors and Clubs in order to facilitate the providing of assistance to clubs when required. Clubs that earn 5 points or more out of 10 are recognized by Toastmasters International.

Blog #1 for Area 62 Toastmasters

Things are about to get underway for the 2009 -2010 toastmasters year. I am excited to be the area governor for area 62 (Guelph, ON)

There are 6 great clubs, two of which are corporate club.

I have spoke to most of the executive or club presidents and I am looking forward to my first club visits and inducting the new club officers in July.

I want to let everyone know that my role is one of facilitation, I am here to make sure your clubs have every opportunity to bring your members goals and your club goals to fruition. The tools are available as it the training and support from myself and every other toastmaster.

The main purpose of this blog is to create a vehicle through which ideas can be easily communicated, comments can be made and we may stay on top of the goings on for our Toastmasters area.

We will have an exciting year of speeches, training, contests and social events where we will learn and grow. We may even make some new friends along the way.
